To strengthen newborn care in Meghalaya, the Smart Village Movement (SVM) launched the first pilot of the Dream Warmer™ in Mawkyrwat, South West Khasi Hills District, in collaboration with the National Health Mission (NHM) Meghalaya and Global Newborn Solutions. This simple yet powerful innovation enables frontline healthcare workers to provide safe, at-home care for premature and low-birth-weight babies. It can be used in conjunction with Kangaroo Mother Care (KMC).
In Meghalaya’s remote and hilly regions, hypothermia remains one of the silent threats to newborn survival. The Dream Warmer™ provides a practical, non-electric, reusable solution that helps babies stay warm and safe even in resource-constrained settings.
On August 29, 2025, the Dream Warmer™ initiative reached another milestone with the official handover of four kits to Jowai Maternal and Child Health Hospital in West Jaintia Hills District. The event was graced by leading health officials, including:
- Keshav Sharma, State Consultant for RMNCH, NHM
- P. R. Marak, State Nodal Officer for Child Health and Joint Director, DHS (MCH)
- J. Uriah, District Maternal and Child Health Officer, West Jaintia Hills, Jowai
- The Medical Superintendent, pediatric doctors, staff nurses, and the SVM team
The session featured an orientation and hands-on demonstration, equipping healthcare providers to integrate the Dream Warmer™ into both clinical and community care practices.
With this step forward, SVM and its partners are working together to ensure that every newborn in Meghalaya has a safer, warmer beginning to life.
